Find the serial number of a Hyster forklift on the right side of the vehicle under the hood. The serial number is stamped into the frame. The serial number of Hyster forklifts is in a letter-and-number format and, depending on the model, varies in length. Use this number to order parts or inquire about services for the Hyster forklift. A: Post-1957 Hyster forklift serial numbers come in four parts and give information about four different things: the design series of the lift, where the lift was manufactured, the sequence of the lift, and the year it was made.

OT: Hyster Forklift Age?
I looked at a Hyster fork truck today. It is a model H50F, serial number B3D 2129K. The engine is a Continental model G19?, SN 2213. The dealer says it's a 1994 (claims he was told it's a '94, but didn't run the serial number). Can anyone tell me the actual year of manufacture?
Overall, it looks like a nice truck, but the salesman had this aura of used-car-salesman emanating from his soul.
Thanks,

Johnny;
Per my serial number book.
'The last letter of the serial number not model number indicates the year of manufacture, starting with an 'A' 1957. ('I', 'O' and 'Q' are not used).'
A-1957
B-1958
C-1959
Follow this up to Z-1979 and then restart with 'A'.
The K says 1966 or 1989.
Any dealer worth his salt can tell a Hyster year off the top of his head. It is the easiest to decipher. If in doubt, contact my friends at Fork lift year dot com. Tell Bart or Ron I sent you.

I've got a Hyster YT40 with an air cooled Wisconsin and the Ser# is YT72148. I beleive it is a 1959 but the number dosn't seem to work with your system. Is 59 right for this ser#? Bob

Johnny,
I emailed your info to a wholesaler whom I have used for many years and he came back with a 1966 Mod. and I think he is a lot closer than your sales guy as that Mod. cont.Eng was of that era? but I wouldn't bet the ranch on it? - Hot Rolled

I do believe it's a '66
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your help. Based upon your replies and other inquiries, it all adds up to 1966. That old continental engine is what really dates it to '66 vs. '89.
Did I mention the salesman had this aura about him? We haven't spoken yet today, but I intend to inform him that we won't be doing business, ever.
Here's another good one. The salesman knew I was looking for a LP truck and when he called me about this Hyster he said it was LP. It was only during the second or third phone call, when I was making plans to inspect it, that he admitted it was actually a gas, but he would convert it to LP if I bought it. I've been told that an LP engine will last roughly twice as long as a gas engine.
Take care,

I know you are not going to buy the forklift but its a Ford Industrial Engine, type G193 not a Continental.
It is 1966 manufacture from the 'K' suffix as stated previously as the H50F was built between 1965 and 1972.
Still a good truck if looked after but not worth much due to its age. - Wanna-BeAluminum

YT40 serial number/mfg date (OT)
I just purchase a running YT40 fork lift and it all appears to be in original condition. All the ID plates are intact (though some faded or paint over sprayed). The Serial number is YT90536. Since BobH reports his is YT72148 and is '59 I would assume, if the build numbers are sequential, mine would be someplace in the early '60s. That sounds about right for it's condition.
I haven't had any luck finding a manual but hope to find something on the hydraulic pump and tilt back ram at a local hydraulic shop. Both still work but the pump is very noisy (groweling sound) and the till-back creaps forward and I suspect the piston ring is leaking by.
If anyone has had experience with the Hyster YT40 pump, I would appreciate some info on what type of pump it is and for right now, what type of oil I should be using. On my previous Clark Yard Lift 2000, '54, it used grade called 'Farm-Oil' which was about 30 weight. The oil that is in the tank now seems lighter than 30 but has the smell and appearance of lub oil. Perhaps I have too light an oil and that is the reason for the growling noise in the pump. Other than the noise, the pump and controls operate very well. (it's not the normal hydraulic howling noise, more mechanical ).
Sorry, this is getting off topic.
Steve
